The company’s founder Karol Markiewicz grew up near Wroclaw. The Polish city, which was formerly the capital of the Prussian province of Silesia, is spread over a total of twelve islands, which are connected by almost 300 bridges. Numerous buildings steeped in history and architectural gems characterise the cityscape. This is why Wroclaw is also known as the “Polish Venice“.

In 1988 – before he had reached the age of 18 – Karol decided to leave his home country. He chose the Schöneberg district in former West Berlin as his new home. At the beginning, he was particularly influenced by the contrast between the socialist, colourless Poland at that time and the freedom, individualism and creative competition he experienced in West Germany. These impressions accompany Karol to this day. They are still a constant driving force for his work. During the reunification period, Karol’s fascination for the diversity and uniqueness that characterises German architecture grew during his work as a construction surveyor. It shaped his architectural sensibility, which distinguishes him today. A lucky coincidence provided a caesura in Karol’s professional biography. A new position as project manager led him to a listed building in the Baltic Sea resort of Heringsdorf, which had to be restored in collaboration with a developer. Especially the repair of the historic stairway caused complications. Karol carried out a nationwide search for a suitable company that could have handled this challenging task, but it was unsuccessful. He therefore decided to take the initiative himself, because he had discovered a promising niche in the market here.

Guided by a clear vision, inventiveness and drive, Karol founded the innovative construction company “markiewicz” in 1996. In line with the company’s philosophy, it became a home for individualists and style-defining designers who do not shy away from great challenges. Today, “markiewicz” is a second-generation staircase manufacturing company established in the European region.The successful cooperation with renowned architects, the realisation of the most demanding projects and numerous awards bear witness to this. 25 years of continuous development and preservation of traditional craftsmanship as well as the established, internationally active network of partner companies, designers and artists enable “markiewicz” to realise almost any staircase project, no matter how unique, beyond Europe’s borders.

In doing so, we are characterised on the one hand by a feeling for the individual wishes of our clients and on the other hand by the highest degree of artistry in the practical execution. Our philosophy is to see the end result of our work as an enrichment of our own efforts, to treat our clients and projects with the highest esteem and to create objects of art in their beauty for generations to come.
